Job Description:
Canonical – the publisher of Ubuntu and a pioneer in open-source – is hiring a Site Reliability / GitOps Engineer for its global Information Systems team. This role focuses on automating infrastructure and driving reliability for services used by over 60 million Ubuntu users.

Responsibilities

  • Implement infrastructure as code (IaC) using version control, CI/CD, and peer review
  • Automate software operations across private and public clouds
  • Improve resilience and scalability of Canonical’s cloud and container systems
  • Own operations of core production services used globally
  • Troubleshoot issues from kernel to application layer
  • Maintain and optimize observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch
  • Collaborate with engineering teams on service architecture and documentation
  • Participate in global team meetups (2–4 times/year) in rotating international locations

Requirements

  • Strong experience in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible, etc.)
  • Python development experience (medium to advanced level)
  • Deep Linux systems knowledge (networking, routing, firewalls)
  • Familiarity with enterprise Linux servers and cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure)
  • Practical experience with CI/CD, GitOps, monitoring and alerting tools
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or similar field
  • Strong English communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Passion for open source and the Ubuntu ecosystem

Bonus Skills

  • Experience contributing to open-source projects
  • Knowledge of Ceph, databases, containers (LXD, Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Performance tuning and capacity planning experience
  • Exposure to Agile, DevOps practices, and remote team collaboration
