Job Overview
Role: Linux Kernel Engineer
Location: Remote (Asia Pacific – Hyderabad, India)
Employment Type: Full-time
Experience: Fresh graduates to experienced professionals
As a Linux Kernel Engineer, you will be part of the global Canonical Kernel Team, contributing to the development, optimization, and security of Ubuntu Linux kernels across diverse platforms including cloud, embedded devices, desktops, servers, and supercomputers.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with a globally distributed kernel engineering team.
- Work with silicon, cloud, and hardware vendors on cutting-edge platforms.
- Diagnose and resolve kernel issues reported by customers, community, or testing.
- Take ownership of a flavor of the Ubuntu Linux kernel and ensure its delivery.
- Submit, review, and apply Linux kernel patches upstream and internally.
- Improve tooling and automation for kernel delivery and testing.
- Participate in benchmarking, stress testing, and performance optimization.
- Support areas like kernel live patching, FIPS compliance, real-time kernels, networking, and storage (Ceph, DRBD).
Required Skills
- Strong programming experience in C; additional knowledge of Python or Golang is a plus.
- Experience with operating system kernel internals (Linux preferred).
- Proficiency with Git and collaborative development.
- Strong Linux background (Ubuntu/Debian preferred).
- Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken).
- Ability to travel internationally 2–4 times per year for company events.
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience with device drivers, BSPs, low-level system engineering.
- Knowledge of Ubuntu/Debian packaging, Snap packaging.
- Understanding of Linux kernel upstream processes and release cycles.
- Familiarity with performance engineering, security hardening, CI/CD automation.
- Previous involvement in open-source projects.
