About the Company:
Canonical is a global leader in open-source software and the publisher of Ubuntu – one of the most widely used operating systems in enterprise technology. With over 1200 employees in 75+ countries, Canonical powers public cloud platforms, AI, IoT, and next-gen development initiatives. The company is founder-led, profitable, and growing steadily.

Role Overview:

This role is ideal for recent graduates or early-career professionals passionate about Linux, open-source systems, and low-level programming. As part of the team, you'll work on the world’s most widely deployed Linux kernel, supporting cloud infrastructure, edge computing, and emerging hardware platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate regularly and proactively with a global, distributed team
  • Learn from senior engineers to understand Linux kernel internals
  • Contribute to enabling Ubuntu on bleeding-edge silicon, embedded devices, and developer platforms
  • Troubleshoot and resolve kernel-level issues raised by users or discovered via testing
  • Take ownership of the delivery pipeline for Ubuntu Linux kernels
  • Improve tooling, automation, and testing processes
  • Submit and review Linux kernel patches and work with upstream maintainers

What We’re Looking For:

  • Self-starter with strong organizational skills and a remote work mindset
  • Effective communication skills in English (written and verbal)
  • Proficient in C and/or Rust
  • Understanding of operating system internals and Linux kernel fundamentals
  • Familiarity with Git and version control workflows
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally 2–4 times a year

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience or interest in Rust
  • Knowledge of Python or Bash scripting
  • Prior exposure to Ubuntu/Debian packaging or Snap
  • Experience with kernel patching, debugging, or hardware bring-up
  • Understanding of device drivers, Board Support Packages (BSPs), and low-level system design

What Canonical Offers:

  • Fully remote work with international team meetups 2–4 times a year
  • $2,000 annual learning and development budget
  • Performance-based annual bonus
  • Paid maternity/paternity leave and wellness programs
  • Travel upgrades and perks during company-wide events
  • Generous holiday leave and recognition programs

About Canonical:
Canonical is the creator of Ubuntu and a major force in open-source software, cloud-native operations, and enterprise DevOps. The company supports innovation across cloud infrastructure, AI, robotics, and security. Most of the team has been remote since its inception, creating a high-performance distributed workforce built on trust, autonomy, and global collaboration.
