Job Description:
Join Canonical, the leader behind Ubuntu, as a Junior Linux Kernel Engineer working remotely with a global team on the world’s most widely used Linux kernel. This is a unique opportunity for early-career software engineers passionate about open source, operating systems, and low-level system programming.

Key Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with a globally distributed team to develop and maintain Ubuntu Linux kernels
• Learn from senior mentors and deepen your understanding of kernel internals
• Work on security hardening, third-party driver integration, and platform optimizations
• Diagnose and fix kernel issues from community and customer reports
• Submit, review, and apply kernel patches upstream
• Improve automation and tooling for kernel delivery and testing

Required Skills & Experience:

• Strong programming skills in C; Rust knowledge is a plus
• Familiarity with version control (git) and software development best practices
• Understanding of operating system kernel fundamentals
• Motivated self-starter with good English communication skills
• Willingness to travel twice yearly for in-person global team events

Preferred Skills:

• Experience with Python and Bash scripting
• Prior exposure to Ubuntu/Debian packaging
• Kernel patching and debugging experience
• Knowledge of device drivers and low-level system engineering
