Job Description:
Canonical, the pioneer behind Ubuntu, is seeking a Linux Kernel Engineer to join its globally distributed kernel team. This role offers an exciting chance to work on cutting-edge kernel development for public cloud, AI, IoT, and enterprise environments.

Role Highlights:

  • Collaborate with global teams and industry-leading silicon partners
  • Deliver Ubuntu Linux kernel flavours for diverse hardware and cloud platforms
  • Drive kernel performance, security, virtualization, and container technology improvements
  • Participate in upstream kernel development and community interactions
  • Work remotely with flexible hours, travel twice a year for team sprints

Key Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose and fix kernel issues reported by users and found via testing
  • Maintain and benchmark kernels optimized for various platforms (embedded, cloud, supercomputers)
  • Develop tooling and automation for kernel build and testing pipelines
  • Submit and review kernel patches collaborating with upstream maintainers

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Strong programming experience in C (Python, Golang a plus)
  • Familiarity with Linux kernel internals (Ubuntu/Debian preferred)
  • Proficient with Git and kernel development workflows
  • Excellent communication and ability to work in distributed teams
  • Willingness to travel internationally twice a year
  • Nice-to-have: device driver expertise, packaging (Snap/Debian), CI/CD automation, open source contributions
