Canonical – Graduate Software Engineer (Open Source & Linux)


Location: Remote (Asia Pacific, Hyderabad)
Experience: Freshers (Graduating in 2024 or 2025)
Qualification: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Mathematics, or a related STEM discipline

Role Overview
As a Graduate Software Engineer, you’ll work with our global engineering teams on open-source projects and commercial business systems. From Linux system internals to cloud infrastructure, AI, and IoT, you’ll gain hands-on experience with a wide range of technologies.


Key Responsibilities

  • Shape the product roadmap at global sprints held twice a year.
  • Design high-quality, resilient, and performant code for millions of users.
  • Master key programming languages like Python, Golang, Rust, C/C++, JavaScript, and Bash.
  • Engage with the open-source community through code reviews and issue tracking.
  • Respond to enterprise customer issues and develop an understanding of business needs.
  • Build expertise in Linux systems, security, and infrastructure.

What We’re Looking For

  • Exceptional academic track record in high school and university.
  • Confidence to write and deliver high-quality code in Python, Rust, C/C++, Golang, JavaScript, or Java.
  • Experience with Ubuntu or other Linux distributions.
  • Proven ability to achieve outstanding results beyond expectations.
  • Personal projects in software engineering outside of curriculum.
  • Excellent written and spoken English and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility, curiosity, accountability, and a proactive attitude.
  • Willingness to travel internationally 2-4 times per year for company events.

Preferred Skills

  • Contributions to open-source projects.
  • Experience with Linux distributions like Debian, Fedora, Arch, or Nix.
  • Strong leadership and organizational abilities.
  • Cloud knowledge (AWS, GCP, Azure) and familiarity with DevOps practices.
