Job Description

NEET-UG 2025 to Be Conducted in Pen-and-Paper Mode

The central government has officially announced that the NEET-UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduate Courses) for admissions to medical colleges will be conducted in the traditional pen-and-paper (OMR-based) format. The exam will be held nationwide on the same day and in a single shift.

This decision comes after extensive discussions between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health. Officials confirmed that the decision aligns with the guidelines of the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Why the OMR-Based Format Was Chosen

Reports had earlier suggested that the National Testing Agency (NTA) was considering conducting NEET-UG 2025 in an online Computer-Based Test (CBT) format, similar to JEE Main. In fact, an expert committee, chaired by former ISRO chairman Dr. Kasturirangan, had recommended shifting to an online format for better efficiency and modernization.

However, after evaluating the logistical challenges and student readiness for such a transition, the government opted to retain the traditional OMR-based mode. Officials cited the need for a fair and uniform approach, ensuring accessibility for all students across the country.

Record Participation in NEET

NEET-UG is one of the largest exams in India in terms of participation. In 2024, over 24 lakh students appeared for the exam. With numbers expected to grow in 2025, the decision to continue with the familiar pen-and-paper format is aimed at minimizing any disruption for students.
