Job Description:

Mercari, a Japan-based tech unicorn and global C2C marketplace, is hiring a Lead/Staff Cloud Network Engineer for its India Platform Engineering team. As part of our global transformation, this role supports mission-critical systems from edge connectivity to cloud infrastructure.

The Networking Platform Team manages networking infrastructure across data centers, Kubernetes platforms, and service meshes (Istio), ensuring secure, reliable global communications.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, build, and evolve cloud networking and infrastructure solutions to scale globally.
• Implement and manage network features supporting multi-region and hybrid architectures.
• Reduce operational engineering costs by automating platform operations.
• Improve platform security, reliability, and performance in collaboration with SRE and Security teams.
• Migrate services with zero downtime and enable new platform adoption.
• Provide networking as a service to internal users using automation and tooling.
• Mentor and collaborate with engineering teams to promote platform best practices.

Minimum Requirements:

• 8+ years of experience in operating scalable production systems.
• Deep understanding of networking (TCP/IP, CDN, DNS, TLS, HTTP, OSI Layers 4–7).
• Cloud networking in GCP and/or AWS in production environments.
• Proficiency in Linux and Kubernetes networking (routing, proxies).
• Infrastructure as Code (IaC) experience (Terraform, Python, Bash).
• Familiar with tools such as Envoy, HAProxy, and NGINX.
• Strong documentation, system design, and communication skills.
• Ability to drive cross-functional initiatives and deliver high-impact results.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with service mesh tools (Istio, Linkerd)
• Proficient in Python or Go for infrastructure automation
• Experience supporting 100+ microservice deployments
• Prior contributions to open-source or cloud-native projects
• Experience with secure and scalable cloud architectures
• Strong focus on developer experience and internal tooling
